An amendment to the Animal Protection Act came into force on 1 April 2025 , prohibiting the long-term tethering of dogs . The aim is to prevent animal cruelty and ensure more dignified living conditions for them. Dog owners are now obliged to offer their dog a space where it can move freely , rest and feel safe.

What does this mean for dog breeders and owners?

Previously, it was common for dogs to be kept on chains or ropes – often without shelter or exercise. The new law prohibits this behavior and requires that the dog be provided with appropriate facilities that meet its needs.
